Electronica EDM Rising

Lately, the music I'm drawn to when writing about wine is Electronica/EDM.

It is much easier for me to concentrate on my ideas and writing with a good base beat and hypnotizing sounds. One of my recent discoveries via a friend in Vancouver, BC (thank you Little Miss Risk) is DJ AppleCat!

DJ AppleCat -

Story Teller, DJ, Beat Weaver, Writer and Artist. Miss Mya AKA AppleCat was raised in Vancouver BC and now resides in Victoria. Music since the day she was born was her number one passion, every other endeavour always led back to. With a diverse musical background she prefers everything from Old School Punk rock to classical era composures, from 90's alternative to 40's jazz, from Indian/Balkan to That deep kind of bass that penetrates you from the back of your eye sockets to deep in your sacrum. Fusion. She loves her fusion. Poetry and grace, mixed with live mashup, reworking and mixed tempo sets bending the perception of "genre" and blending sweet melody, dirty deep bass with a little "je ne sais quoi."

Follow the link and check out her mixes on SoundCloud.

Long time no post, I know. Will see if I can get some time to write here more. Until then, you can always check out my wine reviews at Wild 4 Washington Wine.

J'aime ton Wine: This is how to Pair Wine with Music!

Unfortunately, I have not been to any concerts since my last post.

I have been listening to Songza on my iPad, a lot.

Yes, I have been wine tasting, wine touring, wine writing and drinking plenty of wine at home.

This morning I was checking on my new twitter followers on my main twitter account, @wild4wawine and became curious about a new follower from Paris, France:

Admittedly, my two quarters of college French serve me little good today. Hey, it was my last year of school, I audited French 102 and it was also a lovely play in the sun Spring. Priorities. Today I regret not taking French classes more seriously. Just to know what Ms. Lolita Sene is saying in the following video.

Watch this video from J'aime ton Wine (I Love your Wine) because she tastes wine with music. And she does it correctly. I love her expressions and exuberance - it does not matter to me what she is saying - I just love the way she is saying it. And there's the music too, tying it all together. Bravo!

Enjoy the following video and don't forget to visit her wine blog

Cheers, William!

Status Update re: Big John Bates Interview

My mantra this year is, "Just ask."

Just wanted to let everyone know that I've been busy traveling and writing. Especially, writing about my week long visit to the Vancouver International Wine Festival in Canada.

photo: Brandy and John Bates.

While I was in Vancouver, I interviewed Big John Bates and his wife Brandy Bones Bates of the band, Big John Bates. If I had not asked for the interview, the interview would not have happened. Just saying. Our visit was absorbing and informative. They also exposed me to a lot of new music. Yes, I have a shopping list.

Here's an excerpt from the interview:

“Question: Where's your strongest fan base?

John and Brandy: Germany!

John: Germany, western Canada, Mid-western United States. They are the three that keep us going. Playing music. They are good people. They are not looking for the next big flavor. Enough fans who are more focused on independent stuff. The heartland of America things are more real. I get that impression. From Montana, Fargo, all the way to Wisconsin, to Michigan. We usually play as far down as Pennsylvania. We're always looking for bands to tour with.”

Here's the link to the complete interview: Day Two: Big John Bates and Brandy Bones Bates Interview

When I am able, I will begin sharing more music and wine pairings.

Feel free to comment and share your music and wine pairing suggestions.

- Cheers, William.

Juanitos Sai K Delic Party

It's Friday so I thought some party music needed to be posted.

Juanitos music is kind of retro 60's Funk. I discovered their music several years ago when I was browsing the French music site, Once you create a jamendo account, you can download as many albums or songs as you want. For free. Music is shared by the artist under the Creative Commons license*.

Paul Cheneau, Lady of Spain Brut.
Music and Wine Pairing: While the band is French, the music is often in Spanish. So I figured  that Spanish CAVA would be a great pairing. Party music + party wine makes Paul Cheneau Lady of Spain Brut - Cava the perfect choice for Juanitos music. "This sparkler was lemony on the nose and palate, pale yellow color with a touch of green, crisp, soft bubbles, honey on the finish, bright on the back sides of my tongue..."

About Juanitos: (Did I mention that they are a French group?)
Coté 2009 : Juanitos ou Limbo deluxe ne forment qu’un seul et même groupe sont formés par :

  • Juan Naveira, au chant, orgue & spanish guitar
  • Pierre Alberca, B-guitare electrique & B-Vox
  • David Rey, basse
  • Manu BVX, A-guitare
  • Dee D’Yeah, batterie
  • Reno on the Saxophone…

You don't have to know French to download albums by Juanitos for free from jamendo. They have an English language site too.

Lana Del Rey - Ride

This is more of a movie than just a music video at 10 minutes long with narration. This particular song/video connected with me on several levels. This one may affect you.

Music and Wine Pairing: I was torn about which wine to pair with this music. At first I thought a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc was the wine that would work. After some reflection, I decided on a Washington red wine. Then I worried about staining that lovely white dress she wore in the video. So I'm recommending the 2010 Poet's Leap Riesling Columbia Valley. This wine reminded me of polished steel. It was crisp, bright with wonderful minerality. It was not austere, it was tantalizing. Wow! Enjoy.

"Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, better known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer-songwriter. Her second studio album, Born to Die, was released in January 2012. The album sold over 2.8 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of 2012. Musically, she draws influence from what she deems to be the masters of each genre, including Elvis, Janis Joplin, Eminem, and Britney Spears, as well as from poetry and film noir. Del Rey has endorsed clothing line H&M, serving as the model for their Fall and Winter 2012 collection. In 2012, Del Rey became the face of the Jaguar F-Type luxury automobile." Learn more about Lana Del Rey.
